The Tank Brewing Company opens long-anticipated tasting room in Miami

Published at: May 8, 2017

The Tank Brewing Company, one of Miami’s newest and most exciting breweries, is officially open. It’s located at 5100 NW 72nd Avenue just north of Miami International Airport. The 25,000 square foot, 120-seat brewery features up to 16 beers on tap, including its popular core brews, seasonal and special releases, as well as guest taps from regional breweries. With a total capacity of up to 600, the tasting room offer guests the opportunity to view The Tank’s entire brewing process from every seat. The venue also hosts events and activities for people of varied interests, and is available for private parties and corporate functions.

The Tank Brewing Company’s owner Carlos Padron and his team have been working over two years to fully bring the brewery to life. Inspired by Miami’s unique flavors and influence, The Tank’s beers are expertly crafted using only the finest ingredients from mash to tap, and made by combining the latest technology in brewing innovations with superior attention to detail and time-honored brewing techniques. In May 2016, The Tank launched its core craft beers – La Finca Miami, Freedom Tower Amber, and El Farito IPA – which have become a staple at more than 250 South Florida bars, restaurants and establishments. Recently, due to overwhelming demand, the brewery ordered additional tanks for its cellar, doubling its production capacity.

“We are so excited to finally open The Tank Brewing Company’s tasting room and welcome beer enthusiasts, locals and tourists alike,” said Padron. “Miami is a diverse city where you can find interesting people from all walks of life, and this ‘eclecticism’ mirrors the way that our beers come together, and how we want them to be enjoyed. We want guests to feel comfortable at The Tank as they enjoy our beers right where they are crafted,” added Padron.

“Those who enjoy La Finca Miami, Freedom Tower Amber, or El Farito IPA will taste the flavors of tradition, artistry, and fellowship; what we call our liquid innovation,” said Matthew Weintraub, The Tank’s head brewer, and a former adjunct professor at Florida International University’s state-of-the-art brewing science lab. “From the purity of the water and the extensive care that is taken in curating ingredients, to the thinking behind our craft beer names, our goal is to ensure quality and consistency in every sip,” added Weintraub.

Twisted Fork Kitchen, led by Chef Richard Plasencia, will offer guests a menu created especially for The Tank, featuring a variety of flavors to pair with the brewery’s signature beers. “I wanted to create a menu founded in progressive American cuisine without pretension or stuffiness,” said Chef Richard Plasencia. “Our goal is to take guests on a journey using food as the catalyst – with playful dishes that introduce new flavors and complement The Tank’s stellar beers,” added Plasencia.

A first in the industry, The Tank also features a Cigar Shop and Lounge where guests will find some of the world’s top-rated cigars, including Plasencia, Rocky Patel, Aging Room, Casa Magna and Alec Bradley, to name a few.

To celebrate its opening, The Tank will host a series of events throughout May, including an official grand opening celebration on Saturday, May 20, where guests will enjoy live entertainment, great food, and the exclusive chance to taste a “special release” beer.

The tasting room is open Monday through Thursday, from 4:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.; Fridays, 4:00 p.m. to midnight; Saturdays, noon to 1:00 a.m.; and Sundays, noon to 10:00 p.m.

About The Tank Brewing Company
Founded by Carlos Padron with brewers Matt Weintraub and Moh Saade, Miami-based The Tank Brewing Company embodies a homegrown passion for brewing honest, expertly-crafted artisanal beer using only the finest ingredients from mash to tap; from the purity of the water to the extensive care that is taken in curating ingredients. Every drop, every step of the process, and every detail are tended to with pure love of beer in mind — and you can taste it in every sip. The Tank’s popular core beers La Finca Miami, Freedom Tower Amber and El Farito IPA were all inspired by the brewers’ love for their hometown, Miami.

About The Tank’s Beers
La Finca Miami is a crisp and refreshing wheat ale inspired by the “saison” beer style, originally brewed by the farmers of Belgium. The Tank chose the Spanish “La Finca,” which roughly translates as “the farmhouse estate” to honor this heritage. Like the farmhands who labor together tirelessly to yield a fruitful crop, the combined efforts of numerous people from diverse backgrounds have crafted Miami into the cultural gem that it is.
Freedom Tower Amber is named after Miami’s most iconic building and the freedom that it symbolizes to many who have sought refuge in the city. Freedom Tower Amber sports a gorgeous red hue, and features lush caramel-malt flavors, with hints of peach and apricot on the finish.
El Farito is a reference to the beloved Cape Florida lighthouse, the oldest standing structure in Miami. Originally built in 1825, El Farito has been rebuilt and relit multiple times throughout its history, and stands as a symbol of Miami’s endurance. El Farito IPA boasts an intense hoppy nose of citrus and tropical fruit over a subtle honey-like base. This bright IPA will satisfy your hop fix anytime of day.

Tank Brewing Company opens ‘tasting room’

Phillip Valys
SouthFlorida.com

Inside a cavernous Miami warehouse, beer-minded patrons puffed on Plasencia cigars and sipped craft brews poured by the Tank Brewing Company, which unveiled its new taproom to the public on April 28.

At 5,000 square feet, the brewery’s “tasting room” opened in a warehouse district near the Miami International Airport. The tasting room stands among the largest in the city, distinguished by rows of flat-screen TVs, leather chairs and wood tables fashioned from overturned electrical-wire spools.

The tasting room’s opening arrives a year after the Tank opened its 25,000-square-foot brewery and began selling its beers to 180 bars and restaurants via Pompano Beach-based Gold Coast Beverage Distributors. On opening night, about 450 beer drinkers filled the tasting room, says Matthew Weintraub, the Tank’s brewmaster.

“We’re in the middle of unincorporated Miami-Dade, but who cares? People travel for beer,” says Weintraub, an alumnus of Florida International University’s student-formed beer club B.R.E.W. FIU. “People will travel for the experience.”

The Tank came together with help from brewer Moh Saade and Carlos Padron, a real-estate lawyer with ties to the cigar industry. Padron’s stamp on the Tank can be found in the tasting room’s 500-square-foot cigar bar, a temperature-controlled lounge stocked with 125 varieties of cigars. The lounge also debuted April 28.

For now, the tasting room will include 16 beers, including a Double India Pale Ale, the Tank’s bestselling beer; its El Farito IPA; La Finca, a golden Belgian-style saison; the Freedom Tower, a crisp amber ale with notes of caramel, toffee and apricot; an Abbey Six Belgian-style dubbel; Byronic Brown, an English brown ale inspired by poet Lord Byron, a prolific cigar smoker; and Rye-lingual, a spicy, rye-flavored stout.

Because the Tank has few restaurants nearby, the brewery’s new in-house restaurant, the Twisted Fork Kitchen, will serve tapas and gastropub-style fare.

The Tank Brewing Company’s taproom will be open 4-11 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 4 p.m.-midnight Friday, noon-1 a.m. Saturday and noon-10 p.m. Sunday, at 5100 NW 72nd Ave., Bay A-1, in Miami. Call 786-801-1554 or go to TheTankBrewing.com.

Below are some detailed facts about our beers.

· Inspired by Miami’s most iconic building, Freedom Tower Amber is a lager carried by a malt-caramel flavor with an apricot aftertaste. The lager’s approachable taste channels the sanctuary and refuge the tower represents to immigrants from all over the Americas that settled in South Florida.

· A genuine taste of Miami, La Finca Miami is a Belgian Wheat Saison beer with a light, crisp and citrus flavor. Farmers originally consumed this style of beer on their land or “fincas” and yielded fruitful crops from varied workers. Like the “finca,” Miami is a city made up many nationalities, making it a unique cultural gem.

· El Farito IPA’s citrus and fruity hop draws in beer enthusiasts and beginners alike to TANK’s core IPA brew, channeling Key Biscayne’s lighthouse landmark that guided mariners off the Florida Reef. Standing at the southern tip of Key Biscayne, El Farito embodies Miami’s tropical laidback Florida Keys lifestyle. Like the Keys life, El Farito IPA ties into any place and any time of day.

A brewery with a cigar bar? That’s so Miami

By Carlos Frías
For miami.com

A new Miami brewery has a plan to set itself apart: Come for the beer, stay for the cigars.

The Tank Brewing, which launched its beers locally a year ago, will open its long-anticipated tasting room Friday at 4 p.m., along with a separate cigar lounge that is at the heart of the brewery’s character. The brewery, wedged between Doral and Miami Springs on Milam Dairy Road, reflects its owner, Carlos Padron, who has, for years, been involved in managing and consulting in the cigar business.

“Miami is a diverse city where you find interesting people from all walks of life, and this eclecticness mirrors the way that our beer comes together, and the way that we want them to be enjoyed,” Padron said in a release.

Beer lovers likely have come across their beers on tap at many South Florida restaurants and bars. Among them: La Finca Miami, a Belgian-style wheat saison, Freedom Tower amber ale and El Farito IPA. The Tank is among several new breweries opening in South Florida.

The beers are a result of a pair of South Florida’s original craft beer founding fathers. Padron stole away head brewer Matthew Weintraub, 27, from Florida International University, where he was an adjunct professor in the hospitality school, teaching beer-making at the school’s state-of-the-art brew lab. Weintraub teamed with a long-time South Florida bartender and craft beer lover Moh Saade to create Tank’s stable of beers.

Chef/owner Richard Plasencia will man Twisted Fork Kitchen, supplying a special preview menu for The Tank Brewing Co. The restaurant will open at full capacity later this year to service the 120-seat tasting room, which can hold as many as 600 people and act as a music venue.

“For the menu at The Tank, I wanted to create a menu founded in progressive American cuisine without pretension or stuffiness,” Plasencia said. “Our goal is to take diners on a journey using food as the catalyst — with playful dishes that introduce new flavors and complement The Tank’s stellar beers.”

The Tank will announce several tasting room events throughout May, including its grand opening on May 20, on its social media pages: Instagram, @TheTankBrewing, Facebook, The Tank Brewing Company and on Twitter @TheTankBrewing.

The Tank Brewing Co. Has a New Tasting Room

Cigars, beer and live music.

There.

Now you have three good reasons to proceed directly to the Tasting Room at the Tank Brewing Co., a new establishment near the airport where you can drink local beer, sure, but also smoke cigars and watch bands do band things. It’s soft-open now, and these are pictures of it.

After a year of beer crafting, they’ve finally opened this big industrial room with fun things in it. Drinkable things like the Freedom Tower’s amber goodness, or the Abbey 6, or any of the other fine specimens on the beer list.

All of which will pair swimmingly with a nice cigar, which you can have in the cigar shop. It’ll be the smoky area with wooden floors and black leather chairs. Can’t miss it.

But if cigars aren’t your thing, have a seat at one of the bar stools around the repurposed-electrical-wire-spool tables and enjoy your IPA during live music sets on the stage over to the right.

As things go, you and your friends will require sustenance. The menu’s from the guy known as the Ravenous Chef from Twisted Fork Kitchen, which means the TFK burger with guava and manchego will be every bit as good as it sounds.

Assuming that sounds good to you.

The Tank Brewing Co. Opens Taproom

The Tank Brewing Co. taproom opened this week, making the craft brewery the latest in Miami to pour beers onsite for the public.

The announcement was made on the brewery’s social media, which invited the public to an informal “sip and discuss” event and preview to mark the occasion. Owner Carlos Padron says he opened the taproom following a week of inviting test crowds of various sizes.

The debut comes a week after he obtained the taproom’s final permit and a year after the Tank began distributing its beers with Doral-based Gold Coast Beverage Distributors.

Padron credits the bars and restaurants that have carried and promoted his beer with helping to build the brand and draw attention to the brewery, located in an unincorporated industrial space near Miami International Airport.

The brewery measures a whopping 25,000 square feet, with 7,500 square feet for the brewing area alone. Padron estimates the taproom to be at least 4,000 square feet. He says it’s “huge” — holding up to 600 people, with seating for 120 — and has a “relaxed mood.” A soon-to-open cigar lounge, adjacent to the taproom, will offer various high-end cigars Padron has been associated with, including Rocky Patels, Alec Bradleys and a line of Plasencias. There’s something for everyone, Padron says, including board games.

He says he hasn’t yet received the permit to open the lounge but expects to receive it within the next week.

“It’s a big space to fill, but the good thing is that we’ve had crowds of 30 and crowds of 100, and they’ve all felt comfortable,” Padron says. “There’s space for every age group and every person.”

Inside the taproom is a bar that features 16 beers on tap (including guest brews) and seats at least 20. Padron hired and trained several staff members, sales managers, and a new brewer.

Moh Saade, The Tank’s brewer, has a background in brewing abbey-style ales and has helped develop the Tank’s core brands, including La Finca, a Belgian wheat saison; Freedom Tower, an amber ale; and El Farito, an American IPA. Matthew Weintraub is the head brewer.

Beyond the warehouse-size taproom is the brewery, housing the brewing system and several fermentation tanks, which can be viewed through glass windows. Padron says he expects the brewery’s capacity to double once eight new tanks arrive. They can hold up to 60, 30, or 15 barrels of beer each.

Several events will celebrate the launch of the taproom. Expect an official grand opening April 28, a VIP and media event May 4, and a thank-you party, with live music, beers, and a special menu, May 20.

Our Favorite American Craft Beers of 2016

Every year we get the chance to drink a lot of really great beers.  We don’t assign them numbers or award points for rarity.  Some of those beers stick out to us.  This last year, these were those beers (in no particular order):

1. Fonta Flora Brewing, Razzmatazz Vol.1:  In my opinion, Fonta Flora is one of the most exciting breweries in the country.  They experiment with local and foraged ingredients, brew killer hoppy beer, but most of all have a portfolio of wonderfully complex and bold flavored and balanced beer.  Razzmatazz Vol. 1 is a beautiful red raspberry wild ale, with an enormous berry bouquet and layer upon layer of raspberry and funk on the palette.  While we could have picked from almost any of the Fonta Flora beers we were lucky enough to have this last year, this one had us from the first smell in the glass.

2. Bissell Brothers Brewing, Lux: We’re suckers for Rye. We’re suckers for hops.  Marry the two and Lux is as close to perfect as you’ll get.  While most people talk about Swish or Reciprocal when they bring up Bissell Brothers, but Lux was a stand out for us given the unique peppery character added by the rye.  Like you’ve come to expect from Bissell Brothers, huge tropical fruit, citrus, and pine will punch you in the face from the first sip to the last.  We popped the can and could smell the hops from 4 feet away!  We love Bissell Brothers beer and this one is our favorite.

3. Forest & Main Brewing, Paradisaea: This brewery, the people behind it, and the beer are all world class.  Paradisaea is a barrel aged saison with citrus and Mosaic hops.  It’s a juicy, just sour enough, beautiful interpretation of the style and is a wonderful representation of what the brewery is capable of.  Part English pub and part barrel aged sour production brewery, F&M is creating some of the most inspiring beer in the country.  Fermenting their sour beers, like this one, on a local forged yeast and bacteria culture, they’re able to create an experience unique to their brewery with each offering. Paradisaea is wonderful.  It’s fun and playful and really got us thinking about all the subtle flavors we were picking up throughout our time with the beer.  We can’t wait to see what’s next from F&M.

4. Cellarmaker Brewing, Nelson: We visited the quaint brewery in November while in San Francisco, with our good friend Jesse Friedman (Almanac, founder).  He thought it was a must while in town – and he was absolutely right.  We loved the experience from start to finish.  The taproom is cozy and the beer is fantastic.  Nelson, which features Nelson Sauvin hops (as the name suggests), stood out as our favorite.  Nelson is just one of those juicy, hazy (not juicy because it’s hazy), dry, and hop forward beers that has you going back for more.  It’s aggressive but soft at the same time.  It’s pungent and powerful but subtle and delicate all at the same time. Moral of the story, it’s just damn good.

5. Crooked Stave Artisan Beer Project, Nightmare on Brett (Leopold Whiskey Barrels on Cherry): Chad Yakobsen, owner and founder of Crooked Stave is the authority on Brettanomyces fermentation.  He’s able to coax unique and interesting character out of his yeast cultures that most breweries only dream of.  This understanding of fermentation also allows Crooked Stave to put out big bold beers like Nightmare on Brett (around 10% abv), which are sour, influenced by fruit, and fermented in whiskey barrels and make them seem delicate and almost wine like.   We love this beer because the dark appearance and whiskey aromatics give way to a complex acidic and fruity character on the palette.  It takes you by surprise and offers a truly unique experience with sour beer as most breweries only use neutral oak or wine barrels for their sour program.  The beer has so much going on but when poured into the glass everything works in harmony.  Nightmare on Brett is a present look to the future for sour beer and for that reason it had to be on our list.

6. The Tank Brewing, La Finca: It’s no surprise that we love saison.  The Tank, which opened earlier this year, decided to make La Finca (“the farm”, in Spanish) saison a core year-round offering and we couldn’t be happier about it.  It’s dry, effervescent, peppery, citrusy, earthy, and incredibly refreshing.  It’s brewed with a nod to the traditional saisons and the history of the style, but is modern in approach and choice of ingredient.  La Finca is brewed with an acute attention to detail and purpose that comes across as a mature “we’ve been doing this for years” offering.  We’re excited about this beer and what’s to come from this new Miami brewery.

7. Civil Society Brewing, Fresh: Hops, hops, hops.  Civil Society just celebrated its 1 year anniversary and has already established itself as a hop head’s dream in South Florida.  Fresh is the beer that, in our opinion, truly separates the brewery from the rest.  Head brewer, Karl Volstad, has been brewing the beer for years, each time fine tuning the approach to make it into what it has become.  An aggressively hopped, ripe tropical fruit forward,  aromatic, and refreshing IPA that gives you all the hops you could ask for without the astringent bitterness.  You can taste the time and effort the brewery has put in to the beer with every sip.  For even more hops, head to the brewery and try the Double Dry Hopped Fresh.

8. Side Project Brewing, Derivation (Batch 5):  I know, I know.  Side Project has made its way on to the favorite beers list every year since we started.  What can I say?  Cory is a master at his craft.  This year, we got to spend some time together down in Florida drinking through several Side Project offerings and although all were world class, this batch of Derivation blew us away.  A huge imperial stout: coffee, vanilla, aged in rum barrels for over a year; yet, somehow it came across as soft and delicate.  We still haven’t been able to wrap our heads around how such a powerful and flavorful beer could come off so nuanced, subtle, and graceful.  Big body, creamy mouthfeel, and dangerously drinkable.  It’s a testament to what Side Project is capable of and quite simply one of the best beers we’ve ever had the opportunity to try.

9. Firestone Walker Brewing, Pivo Pils: This beer may be as close to perfect as it gets.  Because it’s a pilsner and because it’s somewhat readily available it doesn’t get all of the the attention in the beer nerd kingdom that it deserves.  But, it is phenomenal.  It is so technically sound, so flavorful, so refreshing, it’s almost hard to believe.  Firestone Walker is an industry standard for quality and consistency and Pivo is steering the ship.  It’s no surprise that Pivo took Gold at the Great American Beer Festival from 2013 to 2015.  That’s blind tasting, by the way!

10. Casey Brewing & Blending, Oak Theory:  Troy Casey is a superstar in the making, if not already one.  Ask most brewers who they’re watching these days, and Casey Brewing is at the top of the list, and it’s no surprise.  He’s making beautiful funk forward mixed fermentation beers employing old school meets new school fermentation techniques and the results are often times breathtaking.  Funk reminiscent of your favorite cheesy lambic, jammy fruited sours, and just a masterful command over the beers.  Oak Theory is no non-sense Belgian inspired beer fermented in and aged in oak for over a year.  The result is a funky, dry, and incredibly complex beer.  It’s one of those beers that really lets you experience the oak and Troy’s ability to bring out unique flavors through fermentation.  It’s a thing of beauty people!
