THE TANK BREWING CO. TO KICK-OFF OKTOBERFEST WITH HURRICANE RELIEF EVENT

City of Doral Mayor Juan Carlos “J.C.” Bermudez, owner of The Tank Brewing Carlos Padron, brewers Matt Weintraub and Moh Saade and the entire team, invite the community to celebrate Oktoberfest at The Tank.

Following Oktoberfest tradition in Germany, Mayor Bermudez will tap the first cask. Guests present at time of tapping, and have brought a donation for Hurricane victims, will receive a free half-liter of The Tank’s best-selling beer, The Freedom Tower Amber Ale.

On Sunday, September 17, The Tank Brewing Co., one of Miami’s hometown craft beer brewers, will be hosting its first annual Oktoberfest. Oktoberfest – an autumn festival held in Munich, Germany – in late September and early October, featuring beer, games, and competitions. As tradition has it, Oktoberfest officially starts when the mayor taps the first cask, declaring “O’zapft is!” (German) or “It’s tapped!” City of Doral Mayor J.C. Bermudez will be the guest of honor and will officially kick-off Oktoberfest at The Tank.

The Tank has also partnered with Imperial Freight Brokers Inc. and Brokers Cartage Company to transport all items donated since the onset of Hurricane Irma to The Florida Keys for relief efforts. We are kindly asking all attendees to bring items such as water, non-perishable food, ice, toiletries, flashlights, batteries, first-aid kits, baby food, diapers and pet food to assist with Hurricane Irma relief efforts.

At the Oktoberfest celebration, The Tank will be introducing its newest brew, the Oktoberfest-Märzen along with other German-style beers. A medium-bodied amber lager, the Märzen is full-flavored with a dry finish that keeps it drinkable by the liter. The name stems from historical times when this beer would have been brewed in March and stored until Oktoberfest. Times may have changed, but The Tank’s brewers still make it a point to lager the Oktoberfest-Märzen for at least 12 weeks, resulting in an exceptionally smooth beer.

Tank’s Oktoberfest-Märzen was brewing using Floor-malted Munich, Vienna, High kilned malt, Weihenstephan 206 yeast and no character hops. It clocks in with at 6% ABV and 22 IBUs.

Brewing company crafts fun for friends and family with 5K beer run for charity

BY DAVID AARO
OCTOBER 04, 2017 3:37 PM

It’s not often you mix the ingredients of a 5K race with food and, most importantly, craft beer. For Tank Brewing Co., that recipe made for a fun evening as more than 500 racers and craft beer enthusiasts joined together after the event for music, beer sampling, and, of course, more beer.

Interesting characters from all over Miami came together on Saturday for the South Florida Craft Beer 5K, to race, have fun and support a good cause. All net proceeds benefited two nonprofits: Amigos for Kids, an organization dedicated to child abuse prevention; and Live Like Bella Foundation, which supports childhood cancer research.

Runner Haidar Hachem, sporting nothing but a pink pig beanie on his head and bright pink Speedo, was all smiles with his girlfriend, Marilyn Drozco, before and after the race.

Fittingly, the couple met during the Miami half-marathon in January during cold and terrible running conditions. Even in 50-degree weather, Hachem was still wearing the same outfit or lack of, that he had on Saturday. Drozco remembers wanting to quit, but Hachem, a Type One diabetic and cancer survivor, started pushing her — a woman he’d never met — to finish the race.

“I’m like what the heck?” Drozco said. “If this naked man has run 12 miles wearing what he has on, I can’t stop. So I finished the race and we ended up finding each other on social media after.”

“The outfit started back in 2013 when I was just a pig,” Hachem said. “I eventually met a friend in Melbourne who always wore Speedos during races, so one day I jumped the ship, starting wearing Speedos and never looked back.”

Recently, Hachem ran for 24 straight hours and 75 miles to raise money for the St. Jude’s Children Hospital, although Drozco still calls him the naked man.

Ethan Clary and Kyle Graves finished the race first and second out of all the participants. The best part for them is they’re also best friends who entered together.

“I’ve been training with Ethan since I came down to Miami two years ago, and the event here has been pretty amazing,” Graves said. “I always enjoy a nice little beer after the race to celebrate with friends, and the craft beer selection is something I’m not used to.”

Clary, who runs semi-professionally, wasn’t surprised he won and said he was even planning to go for another five-mile run after the race.

The race wasn’t all craft beer enthusiasts and semiprofessional runners. It was a family affair, as relatives of the racers cheered them on and were able to play games with their kids inside Tank Brewing Co., 5100 NW 72nd Ave.

Dan Unke planned to race solo, but with his wife sick, he brought their four children along with him to race, with two of them riding shotgun in their single stroller and the other two running alongside him.

“The craft beer is what got my attention,” Unke said. “We may not make good time, but we’re here for a good cause and some fun.”

After they went through the finish line, Unke and his four small children, excitement on their faces, put their hands in the air and exclaimed, “We did it!”

The race was possible thanks to Carlos Padron, owner of Tank Brewing Co., and Frankie Ruiz, co-founder of the Miami Marathon.

Padron and Ruiz were students at Belen Jesuit Preparatory School and ran track under coach Carlos Barquin. That connection helped them to come together and make this Craft Beer Run happen.

“It’s a great event to unite the community and this city,” Padron said. “All of the craft beer guys are proud to make a little dent in the craft beer world that is new to Miami and this is a good way to get it going and have this event that continues year after year.”

The craft beer was one of the main reasons people were attracted to the event.

University of Miami Marine Science graduate students Marybeth Arcadia, Kayleen Mcmonigal and Kurt Hansen still run as a hobby about once a month during school, but it was the beer that certainly got their attention.

“I found out about this event after getting an email sent out by the Brickell Run Club,” Arcadia said. “Honestly, it said beer in the subject title so that was it, I’m there.”

Other runners, such as Jim Fox and Nurys Eduardo, are used to a great beer selection, as their hometown in Grand Rapids, Michigan, is base to more than 30 breweries.

“We try and do a run every week, so it’s more of a hobby and fitness with us,” Fox said. “But of course the beer is the best part, I’ve never seen anything like this.”

Thanks to Hurricane Irma, there were questions about attendance and how big an event this could actually be. Seventy five runners signed up a week before the race and 250 the day before, but on Saturday 500 showed up.

“Everyone thought Carlos was nuts that he wanted to get the whole beer community together, but obviously he pulled it off,” said Louis CasaMayor, owner of Republica, the advertising agency that teamed with Tank Brewing Co. “I get chills just thinking about it and I’m super proud of him.”

How to celebrate Oktoberfest, Miami style, at our local beer breweries

The craft brew scene is spilling over more than the head of a badly poured pint (don’t worry, that won’t happen at any of these places).
Locally brewed beer is as hot as a Miami summer. And as we approach all the Oktoberfest celebrations, you’re going to want to know where to enjoy them.
So here’s your ultimate guide, from the brewmasters and bartenders themselves, on their “Most Miami” brews — and where to find them.

Abbey Brewing

Brewmaster Raymond Rigazzio at the Abbey recommends a pint of either their Abbey Immaculate IPA (6.2 percent alcohol by volume) or Abbey Hop Lab IPA which are their most popular beers.
“Both of these IPAs have juicy, tropical citrus flavors, which complement the warm humid weather here in South Florida,” he said. The Abbey is the oldest brewery on Miami Beach.

Titanic Restaurant and Brewery

What the Abbey is to Miami Beach, Titanic to Coral Gables right near the University of Miami: an institution and a favorite hangout for locals. Your best bet here is the Triple Screw light ale, their lightest beer and the closest to having a summery taste. Brewed with imported pilsner malt and German hops, is a bit spicy with floral aroma and a dry, tart finish. Translation: it’s so Miami.

Biscayne Bay Brewing

Biscayne Bay Brewing Company brews
Coming up on their one-year anniversary this month, Biscayne Bay Brewing in Doral keeps expanding its beer selection. If you had to choose one to represent the 305 it would be the Miami Pale Ale. The 5.5 percent American Pale Ale is described as a “moderate, refreshing ale with noticeable hop aroma balanced by supporting malt flavors.” It’s the perfect description for the way they like to brew beer, says Co-founder and President Jose Mallea. Miami Pale Ale is available at select Total Wine Stores and Whole Foods Markets.

Claudio Menicocci, in charge of the taproom at Doral’s MIA Beer Co., recommends Miami Weiss Hefeweizen and Mega Mix Pale Ale, both of which are 6 percent ABV and available at select Total Wine, Whole Foods, Fresh Market and Target. Their flagship brew, the citrusy, light and sweet Weiss, brewed with wheat, barley and sweet orange peel, helps the unfiltered hefe produce vanilla, banana and bubblegum esters. The Mega Mix Pale Ale is aromatic, bitter and hoppy, a West Coast light-bodied Pale Ale with a mix of mosaic, galaxy and citra added at the end with dry hops.

The Tank

West Miami’s newest brewery, The Tank, features a non-descript exterior and a huge interior space with plenty of bar seats, tables for large groups and even a private event room. Named after one of Miami’s most recognizable landmarks, particularly to the Cuban community, their most Miami brew is the Freedom Tower Amber. The American amber ale combines a variety of malts, barley, plus cascade and galena hops and a house ale strain of yeast. That combination gives the 5.3 percent ABV brew a malty caramel flavor with hints of stone fruit.

Funky Buddha

Last snow illustration from Funky Buddha in Fort Lauderale. (Handout)
Yes, it’s in Fort Lauderdale but their craft brews can be found widely around Miami. They even have a couple of odes to Miami on their labels. On one of their most popular beers, Last Snow, the label features a coconut snowman on a front lawn with a Miami skyline backdrop. Their Nib Smuggler Chocolate Milk Porter features a cocoa cowboy which is a reference to the Cocaine Cowboys of the 1980s in Miami. However, their most Miami is the Pineapple Beach “a blonde ale with just a hint of pineapple for a very tropical vibe,” said John Linn, their brand director.

NightLife Brewing Co.

The newbies in the Miami brewing game are co-founders and partners Juan O’Naghten and John Cooper with their new brewery inside the Marlins Park Home Plate Garage. Their most Miami beer? Their pale ale, the 90 Mile, is an homage to the distance from Cuba to Florida, across the Florida straits.

“This collaborative beer was made to commemorate the brotherhood that started with our grandparents when they came to this country and still carries on today. At NightLife we are all about the story, and this one is ours,” said O’Naghten.

Lincoln’s Beard Brewing Co.

South Miami’s quirky brewery likes to host events such as the Soultrain Disco Costume Party and an Anxiety Hour, but that doesn’t mean they don’t take brewing beer seriously.

Of the two craft brews available year-round, the P. Swayze IPA (you might want to do some dirty dancing after drinking it) has peach and apricot notes making it ideal for our nearly year-round hot, sticky weather.

Concrete Beach Brewery

Concrete Beach taps.
This brewery offers craft beer lovers a covered area that flows out to their al fresco patio area. And the beer to have, says marketing manager Kathleen Barnes, is their FloridaFest. With Europils, Dark Munich, Melanoidin and Carapils malts, Hallertau and Tettnang Hops and toasted coconut, the 5.7 percent ABV beer is “a traditional Oktoberfest beer with a tropical twist,” said Barnes. “This copper-hued lager opens up with aromas of subtle coconut, followed by notes of toffee and vanilla. Undertones of toasted coconut and biscuit round out this smooth, medium-bodied beer.” FloridaFest is available at The Bend Liquor Lounge and at Wynwood’s Boxelder Craft Beer Market as well as Suviche and The Butcher Shop restaurants.

J. Wakefield Brewing

Another Wynwood brewery (yes, the hipster neighborhood is a brewery haven) J. Wakefield is where you’ll find an homage to Star Wars. That means you can drink their El Jefe Coconut Hefeweizen and tart Miami Madness sour (both have low 5.5 percent ABV) among likenesses of RD2D and Darth Vader. Brand Director Alex Gutierrez recommends El Jefe, “a traditional German Hefeweizen at its core, but with the addition of fresh coconut flakes for a taste of South Florida and its beautiful surrounding beaches.” Miami Madness “our world famous Florida Weisse brewed with guava, mango and passionfruit,” he said has been rated Best Berliner by BeerAdvocate.com and No. 2 in the world by RateBeer.com.

Veza Sur

Wynwood’s newest brewery made a splash on the neighborhood with a huge inside beer garden that leads out to a large patio with plenty of communal seating. Here’s where they have DJs working the decks and the Baja Bao permanent food truck run by Pubbelly. As for the beer, pick the mango wheat, a golden-colored wheat ale fermented with ripe mangoes. It’s on the lighter side with 4.8 percent ABV.

Wynwood Brewing Co.

Taps at Wynwood Brewing Co.
One of Wynwood’s veteran breweries, this place is for the serious craft beer drinker. Minimal décor, laid back atmosphere are the draw here. It’s all about their brews. Their La Rubia can be found at Publix, Total Wine and at lots of other breweries.

It’s their signature and most popular, an American blonde ale that General Manager Marcus Sussman says “has a perfect balance of bready and sweet flavors. La Rubia pairs excellent with seafood, chicken or salads.” La Rubia is widely available including area Publix and Target.

THE TANK, OKTOBERFEST & HELPING THE FLORIDA KEYS

September 15, 2017 by Enri

Following Oktoberfest tradition in Germany, Doral’s Mayor will tap the first cask.

As German tradition has it, Oktoberfest officially starts when the mayor taps the first cask, declaring “O’zapft is!” (German) or “It’s tapped!” City of Doral Mayor J.C. Bermúdez will be the guest of honor and will officially kick-off Oktoberfest at The Tank.

The Tank has also partnered with Imperial Freight Brokers Inc. and Brokers Cartage Company to transport all items donated since the onset of Hurricane Irma to The Florida Keys for relief efforts. They are kindly asking all attendees to bring items such as water, non-perishable food, ice, toiletries, flashlights, batteries, first-aid kits, baby food, diapers and pet food to assist with Hurricane Irma relief efforts.

Founded by Carlos Padron with brewers Matt Weintraub and Moh Saade, Miami-based The Tank Brewing Company embodies a homegrown passion for brewing honest, expertly-crafted artisanal beer using only the finest ingredients from mash to tap: from the purity of the water to the extensive care that is taken in curating its ingredients. Every drop, every step of the process, and every detail are tended to with pure love of beer in mind which can be tasted in every sip. The Tank’s popular core beers La Finca Miami, Freedom Tower Amber and El Farito IPA were all inspired by the brewers’ love for their hometown, Miami.

The Tank is located at 5100 NW 72nd Ave, Miami, FL.

¿Te animas a probar? ¡Salud!

Chug these new brews debuting during American Craft Beer Week

Craft beer aficionados, listen up. This will excite you. You can spend all week sampling new craft brews at your favorite breweries around town in honor of American Craft Beer Week. That’s right, these are brand-spanking new debuts and you don’t want to miss them.

1. Wynwood Brewing Co.

They’re getting fruity and spicy this week at Wynwood’s oldest brewery, with a debut each day from May 15-20. An Imperial Red Ale Alpha Mango Fox kicks the week off then they move on to Some’Mora Cookie a robust porter on May 17 and a variety of new brews on May 19 as part of Barrel Aged Day. See the entire list here http://wynwoodbrewing.com

2. J. Wakefield

The brewmasters here will most likely have a few treatments done on their IPA and berliner weisse to celebrate the week, according to Alex Gutierrez, brand director and tap room manager. One thing’s for sure: Their big imperial stouts including the Big Poppa with coffee, coconut and vanilla; Boss Tycoon brewed with honey, macadamia nuts, coconut, vanilla, cocoa nibs, coffee and marshmallows and the Boutit Boutit with chocolate and vanilla, will be bottled on June 10. www.facebook.com

3. Concrete Beach Brewery

By sheer coincidence, it turns out Concrete Beach is celebrating its second anniversary during ACBW so there’s double reason to celebrate. Wanting to keep everyone in suspense, they’ve been dropping hints about the four debuts on their Instagram page for a few weeks now. Since their big second birthday happens on May 19 they’re having a party from noon to 1 a.m. with half-price growler fills, food by Grumpy Greg’s BBQ, music by Artofficial from 9-11 p.m. The Salty Donut’s providing the donut cake made with their Tropic of Passion and you can try rare beers from J Wakefield, Wynwood Brewing and M.I.A. Beer Co. concretebeachbrewery.com

4. Lincoln’s Beard

There’s never a dull moment at Lincoln’s Beard and they are celebrating a year with the WeirdFest 2K17, the brewery’s first anniversary during ACBW. It’s when they’re releasing an Aged Operational Moxie Quad, Suspicious Cells Guava Mango Wild Ale, Death to Spies Barrel-Aged Moneypenny (Brown Braggot) and Big Whiskey Barrel-Aged Brown. To accompany the debut beers they’ll have an all-female arm wrestling competition, trivia night, live band karaoke, an ’80s costume ball and a Tacos and Tattoos Pig Roast to close out the week. Here’s the entire line-up www.facebook.com

5. Carnival Vista

Carnival Vista Brewmaster Colin Presby tends to fermentation tanks in the RedFrog Pub onboard Carnival Vista. The largest and most innovative cruise vessel in Carnival Cruise Line’s fleet, Carnival Vista measures 133,500 tons, 1,055 feet long and has a guest capacity of almost 4,000 passengers. If you happen to be sailing away on the Carnival Vista after May 20 you can sample their newest craft brew, Miami Guava Wheat Beer. As the only brewery aboard a North American-based cruise ship, Carnival’s Brewmaster Colin Presby created the brew as an homage to Miami. The light-bodied brew features notes of tangy pink guava. It joins the Red Frog Pub & Brewery’s ThirstyFrog Port Hoppin’ IPA and Caribbean Wheat and the Frisky Frog Java Stout.

6. The Tank Brewing Co.

There’s yet another celebration happening, this one’s at Doral’s newest brewery, their one-month thank you celebration happening May 20. Debuting in their tasting room will be Frank the Tank, their imperial stout and a beer they are very excited to finally release, says Victor Castro, director of sales at The Tank.

“Frank the Tank is very bold, with the intense roast-y coffee/dark chocolate roast that you would typically expect from Imperial Stouts. However, what I feel makes it unique is a rich dark berry and fruit character; along with a smooth balance that makes it incredibly easy to drink considering how bold and full bodied it is,” said Castro.

If you can’t wait until the 20th, they’re sending out a keg of it to Union Beer Store on SW 8 St. in Little Havana on May 16. Here’s deets on the party www.facebook.com

7. Funky Buddha

One of South Florida’s most popular breweries, they’re making craft brew fans wait until the final day of ACBW, May 21, to debut two new brews. John Linn, brand director says they’ll premier the new Lemon Meringue Blonde Ale and this year’s batch of Blueberry Cobbler Wheat. The first one is described as a version of their blonde ale made with pilsner malt and a touch of wheat to give it its golden blonde color plus they add vanilla and lemon to make it taste like the fluffy, namesake treat. The cobbler’s description is just as enticing, listed as “a copiously blueberried glass of goodness with real cinnamon and vanilla added. It’s purple, not because we add coloring, but because we use natural blueberries.” https://funkybuddhabrewery.com

8. Tap 42

Rather than debut new craft brews, the Tap 42 in Fort Lauderdale and Boca Raton will feature guest taps for the entire week. In Ft. Lauderdale you can try Funky Buddha’s Undefeated Saison on Wednesday, J Wakefield’s Campos de Fresas on Friday and Boynton Beach’s Devour Brewing Co. Fruity Loops Blonde Ale. In Boca try Wide Awake It’s Morning from Funky Buddha on Monday and M.I.A.’s Neon White IPA and Big in Japan on Wednesday. https://tap42.com/#home
